Want to customize what appears in each clinical note section?

Start by trying DAX Copilot's built‑in options. Many “out‑of‑the‑box” features may already meet your needs. If you need more control, customizable templates let you tailor specific sections. Try these steps to adjust the content that appears in each note section:

  1. Select your primary medical specialty and apply the default style settings

  2. Use the style panel to choose options that best match your preferences.

  3. Follow verbalization best practices to help the AI generate more accurate output.

  4. If these options don’t achieve what you need, apply a customizable template for any of the three sections that support it.

1. Select your primary specialty and start with default style settings

Ask your DAX Copilot admin to confirm your primary medical specialty and update it if it’s missing or incorrect. Your primary specialty determines which AI model generates the note output.

Record an encounter using your primary specialty and keep all style settings at their defaults to see whether the model produces an output that meets your needs.

2. Refine your output using style options

If your primary specialty with the default style settings doesn’t produce the output you need, follow these steps:

Open the style panel

Access the style panel from the Settings menu. To open the style pane;, select Manage my style.

Notes:

  • If you haven’t set any preferences yet, the option appears as Configure my style.

  • The style panel is available only in the desktop app. Once you've set your preferences, you can apply your style in both the mobile and desktop versions.

Choose your style preferences

Select Manage my style and choose from the available style options. Select the options that best match your preferences for each section. Your selections are saved automatically and take effect next time you record a note and apply your style, either automatically or manually.

Your selections in the style panel become your default settings. For future recordings, your clinical summary will combine your specialty‑optimized AI output and your chosen style settings.

  • The History of Present Illness section includes unique options including the ability to specify the type of language used (formal, patient-friendly, etc.) and to format the section using the OLDCARTS structure.

  • The Allergies, Physical Exam, and Assessment and Plan sections feature a customizable template option. Learn about customizable templates in DAX Copilot.

Review whether the style options you've selected meet your needs. Return to the My style screen to update your style preferences at any time or select Reset defaults to undo your style selections.

Apply your style

You may apply your style automatically or manually.

Apply your style automatically

There are two ways to automatically apply style preferences to new recordings:

Method 1: Open Settings and toggle Auto-run to ON.

Method 2: Open the Copilot menu copilot logo and toggle Auto-run: my style at the bottom to ON.

Note: Styles are applied automatically each time you create a recording or you add a new recording to an encounter. If you want to re-apply a style, or apply your styles on-demand, follow the guidance to apply your style manually below.

Apply your style manually

Keep Auto-run turned off if you do not want styles to be applied automatically and you only want to apply your style preferences on-demand.

To apply your style manually, select Apply my style in the Copilot menu  copilot logo whenever you want to apply your styles to a note. This gives you full control to apply formatting when you need it. You can always switch to auto-run if you change your mind.

3. Follow verbalization best practices

The AI model will yield better results if you follow these verbalization best practices.

Begin with an introduction: When recording an encounter, begin by stating why the patient is being seen, and include patient demographic information - this gives a strong foundation for generating an accurate summary. "I'm about to see Jane Doe, a 42-year-old woman. She is attending today for a follow-up review of ongoing lower back pain which started 6 months ago." If the patient is new, ask, "What brings you in today?”

Specify location and laterality: Because the AI cannot see gestures or nonverbal cues, say the exact body part and the side of the body being discussed. This helps ensure symptoms and findings are documented accurately.

State clearly what you want the AI to capture:  The AI only includes information that is spoken aloud, so verbalize the details you want in the note.

  • Avoid vague phrases—don’t say the patient is “on blood pressure medication”; instead say the specific medication, such as “lisinopril.”

  • During the Physical Exam, say the body systems and findings you want documented. If you need standard or “canned” exam text included—even when you don’t verbalize it—use customizable templates to automatically insert that content into the note. (See How to edit default customizable templates).

  • Confirm that the patient understands the care plan and their next steps. Clearly state each diagnosis and explain the actions the patient should take for each one.

4. Use customizable templates.

If the 3 options above don't give you the output you need, then you can use customizable templates to help further customize the AI output for certain sections.

Note: A template applies to a particular section of a DAX Copilot note. Templates are available for AllergiesPhysical Exam, and Assessment and Plan sections.
